Patio heaters are highly essential purchases for all outdoor areas like the patio, deck and terrace. As it is said in the business, anywhere heat is needed in an outdoor setting, there a patio heater will find its place. So, if you have a patio where family and friends gather during the best and the worst of time, your best step is to install a patio heater to spread the love, camaraderie and warmth.
But do keep in mind that the beneficial warmth can quickly turn into dangerous heat when a patio heater is used in a careless manner. Everybody in the house and anybody who uses the small appliance must be educated on the safety measures necessary to protect one’s skin and body from the possible dangers of misusing and abusing patio heaters. Here are the most important of these safety tips.
Back Off, Kids!
Kids of any age must not be allowed to operate the patio heater no matter how many times said child insists on his/her capacity to do so. Kids are not yet equipped in the physical and mental sense to deal with the possible consequences of an outdoor heater misfiring, overheating and generally just going haywire. Let adults do the job of operating the propane patio heaters and, thus, lessen the risks for injuries.
Outdoors Use Only
It may seem like a good idea to use table top patio heaters inside the house when the central heater malfunctions. But you will be better off looking for other ways to stay warm instead of bring patio heaters indoors for the simple reason that these appliances are designed for outdoor use only. Gas leaks, fumes and other hazards can be your worst enemy otherwise.
But not all outdoor conditions are suitable for using electric patio heaters. High winds can knock out the heater, causing the gas to leak out and, thus, the fumes to escape. This is not a good scenario either.
Leave It Alone
By saying to leave the patio heater alone, we are referring to the importance of keeping any and all other things off its surface. For example, a wet towel placed on top of a running patio heater ostensibly to help the former dry faster may seem like an ingenious idea. But take note that not only will it overwork the outdoor heater it will also expose a flammable material to an open source of flame. In short, keep the two together and you have no one to blame for your house burning down.
Gas patio heaters must also be located in a well-ventilated place where there are little obstructions. Wooden shelves beside the appliance are a big no-no. Take note that that it is best to let the air around the heater flow around freely while the appliance is in use.
The best safety tip is to always read and understand the manufacturer’s safety manual for the use of the patio heater. This is true even when you think that all patio heaters are created equal – it’s not, like all things on Earth – so read and be safe. We cannot overemphasize that, like fire itself, patio heaters can be your best friend but may very well become your worst enemy.
